The $1.2-billion Kia Motors automotive assembly and manufacturing plant on 2,259 acres in West Point, Geo., was the largest project of its kind for the State of Georgia.

The project geotechnical engineer, S&ME, Inc. explored the soil conditions at the massive site.   Fill, generally composed of loose to medium-dense silty sand or sandy silt, extended to depths ranging from zero to 30 ft. Medium-dense residual sandy silt or silty sand was present below the fill. Partially weathered rock was encountered at depths ranging from 23 to 95 ft. Groundwater was encountered at various depths.
