This presentation will examine three infamous and catastrophic engineering failures, the Hyatt Regency Walkway Collapse, the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, and the Johnstown Flood. We will then extract critical principles for the ground improvement industry and how to implement them in innovation, design, and construction.
Topics that will be explored include the importance of correct understanding of fundamental soil and structural mechanics, ground improvement elements that are part of a system, and that engineers have a fundamental duty to consider the consequence of failure
